The Institute of Cultural Industry of Peking University, established in October 1999, is an interdisciplinary university-level research institution with the purpose of researching theories and policies of cultural industry, providing advanced management training of cultural industry, promoting the integration of production, study and research, and advancing the development of China's cultural industry. As one of the earliest institutions to engage in cultural industry research and education in China, it became the national cultural industry innovation and development research center jointly built by Peking University and the former Ministry of Culture in July 2002, and was a designated as the National Cultural and Tourism Research Base by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in December 2019. Over the years, the Institute has closely followed the development goals of Peking University "to create a world-class, national service strategies." And it has actively promoted theoretical innovation, talent cultivation and project promotion in the field of cultural industry, enjoying a high academic reputation all over the world.

In terms of theoretical research, the Institute of Cultural Industry of Peking University is committed to research on the theory and application of cultural industry, and serves as a new think tank for national cultural construction in the new era. It has undertaken more than 30 longitudinal research projects, including the National Social Science Fund's major research project "Research on the Development Strategy of China's Cultural Industry", the National Social Science Fund's major research project "Research on the win-win mode and Path of Cultural Industry Cooperation in countries along the Silk Road", the Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Science Research Report and the Annual Development Report of China's Cultural Industry ", and the Beijing Cultural Innovation There are more than 60 horizontal topics ,such as Beijing cultural and creative industry special support fund project "Cultural and creative Industry Value evaluation service platform". Focusing on cultural industry theory and policy issues, it has published more than 40 academic monographs and more than 300 papers. Now the Institute has formed a series of academic publications on cultural industry, such as annual reports, frontier reports, basic textbooks, industry reviews, industry weekly and classic translations. The part-time researchers of the Institute publish about 10 academic monographs and dozens of papers in core journals and important newspapers every year, forming an academic team with high influence in the domestic cultural industry academia.

In terms of academic exchanges, the Institute has organized the annual Chinese Cultural Industry New Year Forum since 2003, which has become one of the most influential cultural industry academic forums in China. Dozens of leaders from the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and various ministries and commissions participated in the event together with guests from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other countries and regions, and a total of more than 10,000 people attended different Forums. At the same time, the Institute has also organized various academic conferences such as the International Cultural Industry Annual Conference, the Cultural Industry Frontier Forum, the Cultural Industry International Doctoral Student Forum, and the Cultural Industry Youth Academic Forum, which have expanded the academic influence of the Institute all over the world.

In terms of talent training, the Institute of Cultural Industry of Peking University has assisted the School of Art, Peking University to form a training brand of "National Cultural Industry Talent Project" in the years of exploration and accumulation, and has formed a multi-topic and cross-regional advanced training project system. In addition, it has successively offered master's degree in Cultural and Arts Management (2000), advanced course in Cultural Industry Management (2006), double minor degree in Cultural Industry Management (2007), doctoral degree in Arts Management and Cultural Industry (2009), Bachelor's degree in Cultural Industry Management (2014), and master's degree in radio and television (2015). And it has established a sound cultural industry personnel training system. The Institute has  organized various advanced training courses with the School of Art, and has successively carried out multiple training courses for management cadres of cultural industries with Beijing, Hunan, Xinjiang, Zhejiang and other provinces and cities, training more than 3,500 leading cadres and business personnel of enterprises and institutions, which achieved good training results.

In terms of social services, the Institute has cooperated with Organization Department of Yan 'an Municipal Committee, Management Committee of Yan 'an New Area, Yan 'an Cadre Training College, Party School of Yan 'an Municipal Committee, Organization Department of Wuhai Municipal Committee, Haibo Bay Area of Wuhai City, etc. It has created a number of boutique red brand projects such as the Party Organization Construction Exhibition in Yan 'an Period, Yan 'an Learning Academy, Yan 'an Municipal Party School History Hall, Wuhai Party Spirit Education Exhibition, and Wuhai Haibo Bay Area Socialist Thought Exhibition with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era.  It has made a significant contribution to promoting Yan 'an to build a new highland of learning socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

In terms of cultural inheritance, the Institute of Cultural Industry of Peking University actively advocates the introduction of Chinese traditional essence art and Western elegant classic art to the campus. The "Aesthetic Walk Culture Salon" series of activities has been staged in Peking University for more than 50 times, successively introducing Kunqu opera, Cantonese opera, folk dance, musical, ballet, etc., which not only enriched the campus life of tens of thousands of teachers and students, but also attracted Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. State leaders including Zhang Dejiang, Vice Premier Wang Qishan and members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee attended the event.

It shows that China's cultural development in the new period is not only the prosperity and development of the cultural industry itself, but also the innovative and comprehensive development after the integration of cultural industry and other industries. In the new era, the Cultural Industry Research Institute of Peking University will rely on the strategic platform of Peking University and the national culture and tourism Research base, integrate resources, combine academic theories with industrial development, and become a theoretical innovation platform, talent training base and industrial revitalization center for the cultural industry.
