Mr. Soichiro Fukutake, General Director of the Setouchi International Art Festival, will be visiting the Institute for Cultural Industries, Peking University, to deliver a lecture as part of the "Creative Design and Arts Management" series. This session is titled:

“Exploration and Reflection on the Practical Pathways of Cultural and Artistic Contributions to Rural Regional Economic Prosperity Over the Past 50 Years — Dialogue and Reflection on the Revitalization of Rural Civilization and Cultural-Artistic Rural Construction in China and Japan.”

Against the backdrop of common challenges faced by rural regions worldwide, can art and culture truly become pivotal forces in reshaping their destinies?

This lecture will take us on an in-depth exploration of Japan’s Setouchi region—particularly areas such as Naoshima—and examine how they have successfully emerged from decline and stagnation through the innovative model of “Art Revitalization,” achieving a profound transformation toward greater prosperity and civilization. The presentation will not only systematically review Japan’s rural regeneration over the past four to five decades but also elaborate on the strategic placement of iconic art installations and regional art museums, as well as the founding logic and far-reaching influence of the world-renowned Setouchi Triennale. Furthermore, the discussion will extend across the sea to the “Peach Blossom Island” project in China’s Yihe River area, illustrating how this model has been adapted and evolved locally, demonstrating the transformative power of art in rural contexts—turning decline into vitality.Building on these case studies, the speaker will distill and share his core insights and pioneering practices: How can philanthropic initiatives be made sustainable?
